A bench, a wall of shafts, and a lot of questions

How it started

The studio opened in 2015 in a Suite B-3 unit on Ashley River Road that had previously been a picture framing shop. Dana Whitlock had spent eleven years building clubs for a regional retailer and had grown tired of a specific conversation: a golfer would walk in, get twenty minutes on a launch monitor, and walk out with whatever was already boxed on the shelf. The fitting was real, but it was a formality wrapped around an inventory decision.

The idea here was simpler. Sell time on a bench, not boxes. Keep enough loose components that the answer is rarely "we don't have that." Let people leave with their numbers whether or not they buy anything. Eleven years later the unit next door came available and the build room moved into it, but the arrangement is otherwise the same.

What the room is like

One hitting bay with a real turf surface and a strip of Bermuda-height synthetic on the left side, because most of what people struggle with in Charleston happens off tight lies. A launch monitor sits behind the ball, not to the side. There is a couch, a coffee pot that runs all day, and enough space that a spouse or a kid can sit and watch without being in the way.

The wall behind the bay holds the sample library. Shafts are hung by weight class rather than brand, which annoys the sales reps and makes sessions faster. Heads live in drawers underneath, sorted by category. Nothing on that wall is for sale — it is all test stock, and some of it is fifteen years old because certain profiles never got improved on.

The rules we work by

• One variable at a time. If two things change between swings, the data is decoration.
• Feel gets a vote. A spec that tests two yards longer and feels wrong will end up in the garage by October.
• The spec sheet leaves with you. No hostage numbers, no "we keep that on file."
• Nobody gets sold a bag they did not come in for. Plenty of sessions end with a single shaft swap and a regrip.
• If your clubs are already right, we say so. It happens more than you would think, and you still get the sheet.

Who we mostly serve

Charleston proper, West Ashley, James Island, Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, and a steady stream from Summerville and Moncks Corner. A fair number of clients drive in from Beaufort or Georgetown for a full-bag block and make a day of it. Roughly a third of the bench time in any given month goes to golfers over sixty, juniors, and women — three groups that off-the-rack sizing serves worst.

We are not a teaching facility and do not pretend to be. If your session reveals something better addressed by a lesson than by a component change, we will tell you that and point you toward instructors around town who do that work well.
